About

Daniël van
der Duim

Daniël van der Duim (1995) is a pianist, composer and producer. Although his musical projects vary enormously, his music always has a clearly narrative and atmospheric character, with improvisation at its core.

After completing both his Bachelor and Master studies in music at ArtEZ Conservatorium — graduating cum laude for both — he toured with his Doppler Trio at renowned jazz festivals including the Mondriaan Jazz Festival, FJIN, FJIR and So What’s Next, and performed at all the major jazz venues in the Netherlands: Paradox, Bimhuis, Lantarenvenster and BreBL. At the same time he plays intimate folk music at home and abroad with Maltese singer-songwriter Alexandra Alden, and performed in Pepijn Gunneweg’s The Great Wonder in theatres across the country.

His musical path began in Nijmegen, where — via the pre-conservatory programme at NSG and the talent class of De Lindenberg — he was admitted to the Conservatorium in Arnhem. Under the guidance of pianists Jeroen van Vliet and Robert-Jan Vermeulen, he studied jazz and pop piano. During his master’s degree he chose to focus on bringing improvised music to a new, younger audience. In the process he discovered the combination of piano and electronics. During the corona pandemic, when all other work disappeared, he locked himself away for four months in his parents’ study with a piano and worked this project out to the finest detail. The result was his first solo project Pintures, released under the name Daniël Tomàs, which has since been streamed millions of times.

Alongside his work as a pianist, he is also active as a composer and producer. He has co-written and produced for artists including Berenice van Leer, ELIËN, Dam Swindle and Alexandra Alden, and composed music for theatre productions by Zuhause, Garage TDi and Pepijn Gunneweg. He has also written for larger ensembles including the ArtEZ Big Collective, the Daniël van der Duim Quintet and Octet, the 3-Oever Orkest and the band Klein Collective.
